Signs and Seasons

Scripture Reference:

Genesis 1:14-18 NKJV: 14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 Then God made two great [a]lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. 17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

Main Idea:

God separated light from darkness. This is not only what God does in His creation, but it is what He does in our lives. His Word is sharper than a two-edged sword that divides clearly and thoroughly between our thoughts from the intentions of the heart. He separates and makes distinctions. God purposely setup the sun, moon, and stars to signal different signs and seasons. In the beginning the world was void and empty but God brought clarity to the chaos.  That is what He wants to do in our lives and why it is important to recognize the signs and seasons in our lives.

1.  To understand signs and seasons, you must first value every life.

There is a purpose to every life. No life is insignificant. You matter! Your life is not an accident!  You are not a product of a circumstance, coincidence, or chance.

Psalm 139:16: “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”

Question:  Have you ever caught yourself believing that your life doesn’t matter? Have you thought that where you are, in life, was on accident?

2.  You must know how to discern the times and seasons

Luke 9:51 says Jesus set His face to Jerusalem because His time had come. Do you know when it is your time? Have you been spending so much of your time comparing your life to other people’s that you have started to measure your life by their life?  When you look at other’s lives, you miss out on your season because you have season envy! Not everyone is in the same season at the same time. Everybody’s journey is different.

God will give you an opportunity, but will you give yourself to the opportunity? God will open the door, but will you walk through it?

There are 3 ways to recognize the signs and seasons of your life.

1.  Get Wisdom

Proverbs 4:5a: Get wisdom. Get understanding…

How do you get wisdom? One way is to read a chapter of Proverbs daily. Proverbs is a book in the Bible that is all about wisdom. If you do not know what to do, God wrote a whole book to help guide you.

2. Get Quiet

Mark 1:35 “Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray.”

Mark 6:46 “And when He had sent them away, He departed to the mountain to pray.”

Find a quiet place with the Father. If you only go to the Father while it is light, and you don’t go to the Light while it is dark, then you will miss out. Jesus was our example…prayer was a necessity for Jesus.

3.  Get Relationships

Genesis 41 is the story about Joseph and his interpretation of Pharaoh’s dream. God did not give the dream to Joseph; He gave the dream to Pharaoh.  God gave, Pharaoh, someone who did not even serve the same God as Joseph, a dream and gave Joseph the interpretation. Maybe the sign you have been looking for and the wisdom for the season you are in will come from a source that you would never expect. If you have quarantined yourself relationally then you may just miss out on what God is trying to do in you and do through you. Isolating yourself from the world can make you miss your season.

Question:  What person, place, or situation in your life is the “Pharaoh” or unexpected source, that God is trying to speak to you through?

Summary

It is obvious when seasons change in the natural. It is important to not overcomplicate things when you look for the signs and seasons of your life. God is not the author of confusion. He wants to bring clarity to your chaos. Timing is important to God.

Luke 9:51-56: “51 Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, 52 and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. 53 But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. 54 And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?” 55 But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. 56 For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village.”

When the time had come, Jesus set His face. There was a shift in the season in Jesus’ life at this point. He was much more direct than He had been in the past. He was decided and resolute.  Some seasons we walk through require a greater level of focus and intensity. There are times that we ask God to open a door but sometimes God has the door ready for us but He isn’t going to let us stumble through it, rather He is waiting for you to press through the door.
