Living Your Blessed Life – The Heart of Serving
Scripture Reference: John 13:3-17
3 Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. 4 So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him. 6 When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7 Jesus replied, “You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.”8 “No,” Peter protested, “you will never ever wash my feet!”
Jesus replied, “Unless I wash you, you won’t belong to me.”9 Simon Peter exclaimed, “Then wash my hands and head as well, Lord, not just my feet!”10 Jesus replied, “A person who has bathed all over does not need to wash, except for the feet, to be entirely clean. And you disciples are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For Jesus knew who would betray him. That is what he meant when he said, “Not all of you are clean.”12 After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? 13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. 15 I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. 16 I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. 17 Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them
Main Idea: This week we will begin a three week Crew series on living our blessed life. How do you live your blessed life? Where do you find a blessed life at? The blessed life starts with a heart to serve. In John 13:17, Jesus says, Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. So, Jesus, right there immediately is separating the difference between knowing something and doing something. The difference between just knowledge and application. He said, It's great that you know these things, you are aware of this example, you are aware of this heart to serve, but it's going to totally change, it's going to lead you down another whole path when you start doing these things. The path that it's going to lead you down is a path of blessing.
JESUS REVEALS THREE POSTURES WHEN SERVING:
1. He Stands Up
Jesus was aware of the need and he went into action. His heart to serve propelled Him to action. 4so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
2. He Stoops Down
5After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. The greatest among you will be your servant. Matthew 23:11
Question: Describe someone who serves you. What impact do they have on your life? Or, how have you seen your life blessed as a result of serving others.
3. He Sits Down
12 After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? 13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. 15 I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. 16 I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. 17 Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them
It is out of relationship and fellowship with God that He revealed to the disciples (and us) the heart of serving. His example prompts us to respond with a heart to serve. We are most like Jesus when we serve others.
Question: Do you serve at Calvary or in your community? How has your family, work, passion, and relationships been affected? If you're not currently serving, where do you think God could use you?
ATTRIBUTES OF A HEART TO SERVE THAT LEAD TO A BLESSED LIFE
A willingness to get involved.
Ability to see people beyond where they are through the grace and mercy of Christ.
Humility to stoop low to bring others up.
A willingness to get messy to make a difference in the lives of others.
24 When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant. 25 But Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. 26 But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. 28 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matt 20:24-28
Call to Action: To have a more blessed life this year, how will you step into serving in the insignificant, in the small, and the areas no one else wants to?
