Haggai 1:2-4 “A Message from God-of-the-Angel-Armies: “The people procrastinate. They say this isn’t the right time to rebuild my Temple, the Temple of God.”
Shortly after that, God said more and Haggai spoke it: “How is it that it’s the ‘right time’ for you to live in your fine new homes while the Home, God’s Temple, is in ruins?”
Israel has just returned to the land of promise after 70 years of Babylonian captivity. God performed a great miracle and caused them to return to the land of their fathers and restore their family inheritance, according to the promise given by Jeremiah the prophet, “In 70 years you will return” to rebuild the walls of the city, their homes and the Temple of God.
Remember this generation never had an opportunity to build dreams or create something they could call their own, so when given the chance they built homes, careers but in the “busy-ness” of it all, they neglected rebuilding God’s House, which still lay in ruin for the past 70 years as well.
The first part of this message from God comes by way of reminder… “Don’t procrastinate any longer… your houses look good again, but don’t forget how living in this “land of promise works”… God and His presence are what cause you to blessed, give you life and sustain you here… none of this works well without me in the middle.
What does it look like to put God in the middle?
vs.5-6 And then a little later, God-of-the-Angel-Armies spoke out again:
“Take a good, hard look at your life. Think it over. You have spent a lot of money,
but you haven’t much to show for it.
You keep filling your plates, but you never get filled up. You keep drinking and drinking and drinking, but you’re always thirsty.
You put on layer after layer of clothes, but you can’t get warm. And the people who work for you, what are they getting out of it? Not much—a leaky, rusted-out bucket, that’s what.”
13 Then Haggai, God’s messenger, preached God’s Message to the people: God’s Word - “I am with you!”
The second part of this message from God, compelling the people of God consider all the things you are doing… Ask yourself, “Is God and God’s House in the middle” of what I’m doing… and then ask yourself “how’s that working out for me.”
The good news of the entire story… Regardless of your answer to the previous question of taking self-inventory… God still says to them and to you and I… “I AM WITH YOU”!
Truth is, no matter what you’ve done… He’s a good, good Father… that’s just who he is!
What’s your response to a God that says regardless of “putting me in the middle” or not, God is still saying… I AM WITH YOU?
Call to Action – Instead of perceiving God as an App on our device… How can we instead make God our Operating System? What can you do this week to make God the center of all I do?
